7 reasons this Italian salon colour is quietly replacing box dye across Europe

You rinse it out, you dry it, and it is softer than it was before you started. The grey is gone. The tone is the one you actually picked. And nothing about it says you did it yourself, over your own sink, for a fraction of what the salon charges.

In the chair

The colour Dara sat down for

In May, Dara won the Eurovision Song Contest in Vienna with Bangaranga and handed Bulgaria its first win in the history of the contest. She is the most visible Bulgarian artist in Europe right now, and she could have her hair coloured with anything on the market.

She has it coloured with Mi Amante COLORI, by one of our own master colourists. The same tube, the same 1:1.5 mix and the same 49-shade system that arrives at your door.

There is no separate professional version held back for salons. What a colourist reaches for is what comes in the box.

Every shade comes with a colourist telling you how to mix it for your hair

1

Box dye hands you one leaflet and assumes every head of hair in Europe starts from the same place. Yours does not. What a shade turns into depends almost entirely on what it is going onto, and that is the part nothing on the shelf tells you.

So each of the 49 shades has its own video, recorded by a Mi Amante master colourist with more than twenty years behind the chair. It is not a swatch reel. It is the mixing instruction for that specific shade: which developer strength to use if you are starting dark and which if you are starting light, the exact ratio, how long to leave it on, and what to change if you have a lot of white hair.

In other words, the advice you would pay a colourist for, given away before you buy. Watch the two minutes for your shade and you will mix it the way a salon would.

The colour needs a developer, and it is sold separately COLORI is a professional cream colour, so it only activates once it is mixed with an oxidising developer, 1:1.5 for almost every shade. A tube on its own cannot be used. This is the single most common mistake on a first order, so put both in the same basket.
  • 49 shades across naturals, ash, golden, copper, cognac, mahogany and superlighteners
  • A video per shade with the developer strength for your own starting colour
  • A free consultation with a colourist if you are caught between two

Full grey coverage, from the first application

2

White hair does not behave like the rest of your head. There is no pigment left in it to work with, the cuticle sits tighter, and most colour slides off it and reappears at the parting and the temples two washes later.

The Extra Coverage series is formulated for exactly that hair. Ten shades, from 1.0 black to 10.0 platinum, built to cover to 100% on the first pass, with no second application and without going darker than the shade you chose in order to get there.

Apply to the greyest section first and give it the full development time. Roots and temples go white first and they need the most minutes, not the most product.

  • Ten dedicated Extra Coverage shades, 1.0 black through to 10.0 platinum
  • Next-generation pigments and plant waxes for a more even deposit
  • 20 volume developer covers grey at your own level, without lifting it

The colour is still the colour a month later

3

The usual disappointment with home colour is not week one. It is week three, when the tone has quietly drained out, the white root line has crept back, and what is left is a shade nobody chose.

COLORI is built against that in two places. Next-generation pigments hold the tone for longer, and plant waxes give the colour something to grip, so the pigment lays down more evenly and stays where it was put instead of washing off the porous sections first.

This is the single thing customers volunteer most often without being asked, and they tend to give it a timestamp: "More than a month now and it has not washed out or changed shade."

  • Next-generation pigments engineered for longer tone retention
  • Plant waxes for adhesion and an even deposit, so it fades level rather than patchy
  • Grey coverage holds through washing; regrowth is what tells you it is time again

It comes out softer than it went in, and that is not an accident

4

Here is the part almost nobody explains. To deposit colour, the cuticle has to be opened. That is the moment hair is most vulnerable, which is why colouring has a reputation. But it is also the only moment anything can get past the surface and into the fibre.

COLORI uses that window deliberately. Riding in with the pigment are nine organic oils including jojoba, argan, macadamia and rosehip, a Veg Keratin Complex of hydrolysed rice and soy proteins, plus hyaluronic acid and ceramides. They go in while the door is open, then the cuticle closes over them.

The result is the thing women mention more than the colour itself: hair that feels conditioned rather than stripped when they rinse. 96% said their hair felt softer and smoother, and 93% that it was easier to comb and style.

  • Nine organic oils: jojoba, macadamia, argan, rosehip, pomegranate, coconut, sesame, apricot and sunflower

The bond protection is mixed into the colour, not sold to you afterwards

5

Softness is the surface. Underneath it sits the actual structure of the hair: disulfide bonds, the links that give a strand its strength. Colouring puts them under stress, and the industry's answer has been to sell you a second product to rebuild them once the damage is already done.

COLORI carries its Plex complex, maleic acid with amino acids, in the cream itself, so the bonds are being protected during the process rather than repaired after it. For hair that has already been coloured for years, that is the difference between another round of damage and a round that does not add any.

89% reported less breakage and fewer split ends. 87% said the overall structure of their hair felt restored. Not from one application, but from colouring this way instead of the way they used to.

  • Plex complex working during the colouring, not after it
  • 89% reported reduced breakage and split ends
  • 87% felt their hair's overall structure had improved

It was built by hairdressers, in Italy, without the ingredient behind most reactions

6

COLORI did not start in a marketing department. It was put together by working hairdressers who wanted the thing they mix behind the chair to exist in a form their clients could buy, and who were tired of watching the same ingredient irritate the same scalps.

That ingredient is PPD. It is in most mass-market colour and it is the most common cause of the itching and stinging women end up blaming on colour in general. COLORI is formulated without it and without resorcinol. The formula is vegan, and it is made in Italy.

The shade system itself was calibrated with a colourist and international technical educator of more than twenty-five years, on a deliberately medium-cold balance. That is a choice, not an accident, and it is why a COLORI 6 reads cooler than a drugstore 6 of the same number.

  • Formulated without PPD and without resorcinol
  • Vegan formula, made in Italy
  • Mixed by professional colourists in salons, not only at kitchen sinks

Women do not just try it once. Nearly half of them come back for it.

7

More than 50,000 women have coloured their hair with COLORI, and it sits on the shelves at Douglas, dm, Notino and Lilly next to every brand you have already tried.

The number that matters more than either of those is that 45% of the women who buy it come back and buy it again. That is a far harder test than a star rating, because it is a verdict passed after the colour has been lived with, washed, grown out, and looked at in daylight for a month.

Nobody reorders a colour they had to talk themselves into.

Before you mix

The recipe, not the swatch

Choosing the number is the easy half. The half that decides your result is which developer you mix it with, in what ratio, for how long. Box dye answers that with one folded leaflet written for everybody. We answered it 49 times, on camera, one shade at a time.

  • Recorded by a master colouristMore than twenty years behind the chair, working with these exact shades on real hair.
  • Two answers, because you are one or the otherEach video splits the instruction by where you are starting from. Darker hair takes one developer strength, lighter hair takes another, and the video names both.
  • The exact ratio and the exact minutes1:1.5 for almost every shade, 1:2 for the Super Platinum series and the toners. Development times are stated, not left to guesswork.
  • What changes when there is a lot of whiteHandled separately in every video, because resistant white hair takes pigment differently. On the fashion shades it changes the ratio outright, to 1:1.
  • Still not sure? Ask before you mixA free consultation with a colourist, so the question gets answered beforehand rather than afterwards.

Before you buy

What to expect

Set against what customers actually report, week by week.

During colouring
A mild warmth is normal. Stinging or burning is not. If that happens, rinse it out immediately. This is what the patch test exists to catch.
First rinse
Hair feels soft rather than squeaky or stripped. The colour reads slightly deeper when wet and settles lighter as it dries.
Days 2 to 3
The tone settles. Ash and cold shades in particular look truer once the initial deposit has oxidised. Judge your result here, not on day one.
Weeks 2 to 4
Grey coverage holds through washing. A colour-safe shampoo and mask make a measurable difference to how long the tone lasts.
Week 4 onwards
Regrowth at the root becomes visible and it is time for a root application, which takes about 30 minutes.

First time using this colour and I am very happy! I took 5.1 and 6.1, and it is the only colour that does not leave me with the red tones I cannot stand. The hair comes out shiny and soft, I loved it. I use the shampoo and the mask as well.

It came out like the catalogue

The colour is wonderful. It covers white hair, it is gentle on the hair, and the shades come out the way they look in the catalogue. I followed the video recommendations and I was delighted with the colour I got. I am writing this 20 days after colouring, because I wanted to be certain before I recommended it. A bonus on top of it all is that the colour tube and the developer are marked with measurements, which impressed me and made the whole thing easier. Thank you for a wonderful product.

★★★★★ RumyanaVerified buyer

I went back and ordered four more

I liked the colour so much that I decided to try almost every shade of blonde, so I ordered another four. The tube is big, so I split one with a friend, and the result was that she said: next time order one for me as well.

★★★★★ Kremena M.Verified buyer

A month on and it has not shifted

The best colour I have used so far. More than a month now and it has not washed out or changed shade. I would definitely buy it again, and I have already recommended it to friends.

Very happy. It covered my white hair, which was the important thing for me. I use the shampoo and the mask as well and the result shows: healthy, shiny hair. Wonderful products.

Answered properly

The questions we actually get

Taken from what customers write in and ask under the ads.

There are 49 shades. Which one is actually mine?

Start from the hair you have now, not the hair in the photograph. Colour deposits pigment, it does not erase what is already there, so your starting level decides what any shade can realistically do.

Then watch that shade's video. It tells you which developer to use for a darker starting point and which for a lighter one, which is the part that actually changes your result. If you are torn between two shades, book the free consultation and ask a colourist before you mix rather than after.

Is the tube enough on its own, or do I need something else?

You need the developer as well, and it is ordered separately. COLORI is a professional cream colour, which means it only activates once it is mixed with an oxidising emulsion. A tube on its own cannot be used.

This is comfortably the most common thing to get wrong on a first order, including for people who buy in store. Put the developer in the same basket and you can colour the day it arrives.

Which developer do I need, and how much of it?

10 volume for toning and for going darker. 20 volume for grey coverage and staying at your own level, which is what most women need. 30 volume to lift one to two levels. 40 volume only with the superlightener shades.

The mix is 1:1.5 for almost every shade, so a 100ml tube takes 150ml of developer. The Super Platinum series and the two toners go 1:2 instead. You do not need a measuring jug: both the colour tube and the developer bottle are marked with measurements.

Your shade's video states its own ratio. If you check only one thing, check that.

My hair is dark. Can I go several shades lighter with this?

Not in one step, and we would rather say so now than have you find out at the sink. Permanent colour adds pigment; it cannot remove the pigment already in your hair. On natural hair, 30 volume developer lifts roughly one to two levels. That is the honest ceiling.

Going from black or dark brown to a light chestnut or a blonde is four or more levels. No permanent colour in any brand does that in a single application. It needs the hair lightened first, and on previously coloured hair it is genuinely a salon job, because colour will not lift colour at all.

If you are going one or two levels lighter, or covering grey at your own level, you are well inside what this does beautifully. If you want a bigger jump, use the free consultation and get a plan rather than a surprise.

Will it really cover stubborn white hair the first time?

Yes, with an Extra Coverage shade, 20 volume developer and the full development time. That series exists specifically for resistant white hair, the kind that grabs no pigment and reappears two washes later.

One thing worth knowing, because it is behind most of the disappointment we see: the fashion shades 7.22 and 7.66 mix 1:1 on white hair, not 1:1.5. At the standard ratio they can go on almost transparent, and it reads as the colour failing when it is really the ratio. Apply to the greyest section first and give it the longest contact time.

Can I mix two shades together?

Yes, and colourists do it constantly to land between two numbers or to knock warmth out of a result. Mix the two colours together first, then add developer to the combined amount at the ratio for that family. So 50ml of one and 50ml of another is still 100ml of colour, and still takes 150ml of developer at 1:1.5.

Two shades from the same family mix predictably. Combining across families, or bringing a Super Platinum or a toner into it, changes the ratio and the result is harder to call. That one is worth a free consultation first.

I have colour and developer left over. Can I keep them?

Unmixed, yes. Reseal the tube and recap the developer bottle and both keep for next time, which is exactly why the 100ml tube goes so far on shorter hair.

Once mixed, no. The reaction starts the moment the two meet, so mixed colour has to go on straight away and cannot be saved for later, topped up, or poured back into either bottle. Mix what you need for the application in front of you.

My scalp reacts to normal box dye. Is this any different?

COLORI is formulated without PPD and without resorcinol. PPD is the ingredient behind most of the itching and stinging people associate with colouring, and leaving it out is one of the reasons the formula was built in the first place.

That is not a promise that nobody can react to anything. Patch test 48 hours before every application, including if you have used it before, and rinse immediately if you feel stinging rather than mild warmth.

Why did my shade come out cooler than the chart?

Because the whole system is built on a medium-cold balance. It is deliberate: it is what produces clean ash results instead of the brassy orange most home colour drifts towards, and it means a COLORI 6 reads cooler than a drugstore 6 carrying the same number. If you want warmth, do not choose from the naturals. Go to the Golden, Copper, Cognac or Mahogany families and you will get it.

The very light ash shades are a special case. On white or very pale hair they lay their ash pigment down with nothing underneath to warm it, which can read grey or even blue. Those shades are built for hair that has already been lifted, they mix 1:2, and on a head with a lot of white in it a warmer number is usually the better call. Ask first on those.

Patch test 48 hours before every use, including if you have used the product before. Hair colourants can cause severe allergic reactions. Read and follow the instructions supplied with the product. This product is not intended for use on anyone under the age of 16. Do not use if you have ever had a reaction to a hair colourant, or if you have a sensitive, irritated or damaged scalp.

Results vary with your starting colour, hair condition, porosity, and the developer strength you choose. Permanent colour deposits pigment and cannot lighten hair that has already been coloured. Shade photography and swatches are indicative; the colour you get depends on the hair it goes onto.

The 96%, 93%, 89% and 87% figures are self-reported opinion from a survey of more than 10,000 Mi Amante users. They are consumer opinion, not clinical measurements.
